Like a warm hug on a chilly day. Like the sun on your base skin after a long winter. Like… now seriously. It tastes like water. That’s right. No yucky aftertaste like hydrogen pills. No funky flavor from alkaline byproduct. Just pure, glacially supreme, hydrogen enriched bliss. Molecular hydrogen is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
If you are experiencing a unique smell or taste, this is usually related to the source water rather than the hydrogen itself.
The water source can absolutely influence the taste and smell, and it's because of what's already dissolved in the water, not because the hydrogen itself is creating new contaminants.
Why the water source matters
Hydrogen water takes on the characteristics of the water used to make it. If the source water already has an unpleasant taste or odor, hydrogen won't remove it—and in some cases, the process of hydrogen generation can make those characteristics more noticeable.
This isn't because the hydrogen is "going bad." It's because of the water chemistry.
Common examples include:
- High mineral content (hard water): Calcium and magnesium can create a stronger mineral taste.
- Sulfur compounds: Can produce a "rotten egg" smell that may become more noticeable during electrolysis.
- Iron or manganese: May contribute metallic tastes or odors.
- Chlorine or chloramines: Can leave a chemical or swimming pool-like taste.
- Organic compounds or algae byproducts: Can create earthy or musty odors.
- High TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Water with many dissolved minerals often has a stronger or more unpleasant taste.
Is it reacting with the minerals?
Sometimes—but not in the sense that hydrogen is creating harmful byproducts.
During electrolysis:
- Dissolved gases in the water can be released.
- The pH near the electrodes temporarily changes.
- Certain naturally occurring compounds (especially sulfur- or iron-containing compounds) may become more noticeable to your senses.
So customers may perceive a stronger smell or taste even though nothing harmful has been added to the water.
Why RO, distilled or purified water often tastes better
Water with fewer dissolved minerals and contaminants generally produces:
- A cleaner taste
- Less odor
- More consistent hydrogen production
- Less mineral buildup on the electrodes
That's one reason many hydrogen water manufacturers recommend distilled or purified water, especially for portable hydrogen bottles.
It Didn't Taste or Smell Like This Before
If your hydrogen water suddenly starts tasting or smelling different when it previously tasted normal, there are a couple common reasons.
1. Has Your Water Source Changed?
Even if you're using the "same" tap water, the water coming into your home can vary over time. Municipal water suppliers may change treatment methods or water sources seasonally, and well water can fluctuate based on environmental conditions.
Changes in mineral content, chlorine levels, sulfur compounds, or other naturally occurring substances can affect the taste or smell of your hydrogen water.
Try this: Fill your bottle with RO or distilled water. If the taste or odor disappears, the issue is likely related to the source water rather than the bottle itself.
2. Is It Time for a Good Cleaning?
Over time, minerals and residue can build up inside the bottle and on the electrodes, especially if you're using tap water or mineral-rich water. This buildup can affect both the taste and odor of your water.
If it's been a while since your last cleaning, we recommend giving your bottle a thorough cleaning following the instructions in the user manual.
