How Often Should You Clean Your Echo Flask?

Your cleaning schedule depends on the type of water you use and how frequently you use your Flask.

Helpful Tip: Even distilled or RO water can leave small amounts of residue over time. If you notice buildup developing sooner, clean your Flask more frequently. Daily cleaning is fine when needed.

Water Type Regular Cleaning Deep Cleaning / Descaling
Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Distilled Water Weekly Monthly
Purified or Filtered Water Weekly Bi-Weekly
Tap, Spring, or Well Water Daily or Weekly Weekly

What Does the “Clean Flask” Cycle Actually Do?

The “Clean Flask” cycle is an important feature, but it’s helpful to know that it’s not solely for cleaning purposes.

During this cycle, the Flask works to balance the polarity of the generator plates. Over time, minerals in your water can cause uneven buildup on the plates due to the electrolysis process. The clean cycle helps:

  • Reverse and balance polarity across the plates
  • Loosen light mineral buildup
  • Maintain consistent hydrogen production performance

Accidentally Consumed Cleaning Cycle Water?

Don't panic. The cleaning cycle primarily generates oxygen to help clean the system. Accidentally consuming a small amount of cleaning cycle water is unlikely to cause harm or discomfort.

What To Do

  • Discontinue drinking the cleaning cycle water.
  • Empty the bottle.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Resume normal use.

For future cleaning cycles, always empty and rinse the bottle before drinking.

Why Manual Cleaning Is Still Important

While the clean cycle supports the internal function of the generator, it does not fully remove buildup, bacteria, or residue on its own.

That’s why manual cleaning and descaling (with vinegar) are still essential to:

  • Fully remove mineral deposits and scale
  • Prevent mold, mildew, and bacterial growth
  • Eliminate biofilm and residue buildup
  • Keep your water tasting fresh

The Best Approach

Think of it this way:

  • The Clean Flask cycle = maintains internal balance and performance
  • Manual cleaning + vinegar = deep cleaning and sanitation

Using both together ensures your Echo Flask™ stays clean, safe, and performing at its best.

Another helpful tip is to let your Flask breathe overnight. Rather than storing it tightly closed, you can leave the cap off overnight, which allows trapped humidity around the upper bottle, cap, threads, and gasket area to escape instead of remaining sealed inside. Reducing that constantly damp environment can help discourage the conditions that allow mildew and odors to develop.

There is one important distinction with the Echo Flask, though: the generator at the bottom should remain hydrated. If you leave the cap off, keep enough filtered water in the Flask to fully cover the generator (roughly about 1/4 full), while still allowing the upper portion of the bottle to remain open to the air. This helps protect the generator from drying out while giving excess moisture elsewhere in the Flask an opportunity to evaporate.

🫧 Regular Cleaning: Bottle, Cap & Gasket (Daily or Weekly)

Regular cleaning removes everyday residue before it becomes difficult to clean.

🚫 Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners
🚫 Never submerge your Flask or place it in the dishwasher
💡 Doing so can damage internal electronics and void your warranty

What You'll Need

  • A soft, nonabrasive bottle brush (See the "Choosing the Right Cleaning Brush" section below for suggestions).
  • Warm filtered water
  • White distilled vinegar (3–5% acidity). Do not use ACV or higher-acidity cleaning vinegar.
  • A clean, soft (non-abrasive) cloth

Step 1: Clean the Inside of Your Flask

  1. Empty any remaining drinking water.
  2. Prepare a cleaning solution using equal parts white distilled vinegar and warm filtered water.
  3. Using a soft bottle brush, gently clean the interior of the bottle.
  4. Pay particular attention to the bottom and the corners of the Flask.

Avoid applying excessive pressure to the generator plates or inserting anything into the generator openings.

Important: Never use abrasive brushes, sharp objects, or harsh chemical cleaners. These can damage the Flask's interior and generator components.

Step 2: Clean the Cap & Silicone Gasket

Your Echo Flask cap contains a pressure release mechanism and a silicone gasket that help maintain a proper seal and pressure regulation during hydrogen production.

Residue and moisture can accumulate around the cap's threading, gasket, and grooves, so these areas need regular attention.

  1. Remove the cap from your Flask.
  2. Carefully remove the silicone gasket using blunt-tipped tweezers or another dull tool.
  3. Gently wipe or brush the threading and accessible interior surfaces of the cap with vinegar.
  4. Clean both sides of the gasket and the groove where it sits with vinegar.
  5. Rinse the cap's accessible surfaces and gasket thoroughly with filtered water.

For stubborn deposits on the gasket, you may soak the removed gasket only in a 1:1 diluted vinegar solution for up to 2 hours.

⚠️ Important: NEVER submerge or soak the cap. Water can become trapped inside the pressure release mechanism and interfere with its operation.

Step 3: Rinse & Air-Dry

Thoroughly rinse the bottle, cap, and gasket to remove any remaining cleaning solution.

Place the cap and gasket separately on a clean, dry surface and allow them to air-dry completely before reassembly.

Fill your Flask with filtered water and allow the water to remain in the Flask while your cap dries.

Remember: Your cap should dry thoroughly, but the generator at the bottom of the Flask should remain hydrated. Do not allow the generator membrane to dry out.

Step 4: Reinstall the Gasket

Once the cap and gasket are dry, reinstall the gasket in its original position.

Make sure the gasket sits completely flush inside the cap, without twisting, bunching, or raised edges.

An improperly installed gasket can cause leaking, make the cap difficult to secure or remove, and cause pressure regulation issues.

Step 5: Run the Clean Flask Cycle

  1. Fill your Flask with fresh, filtered water to the appropriate fill level.
  2. Securely lock the cap.
  3. Open the Flask's Settings → Clean Flask.
  4. Allow the cleaning cycle to finish.
  5. Pour out the cleaning-cycle water and rinse thoroughly (Never drink the water used during a cleaning cycle.)

Your Flask is now ready to refill with fresh drinking water and use normally.

🫧 Deep Cleaning & Descaling (Weekly, Bi-Weekly or Monthly)

Minerals naturally present in water can accumulate around the hydrogen generator. If allowed to build up, these deposits may interfere with the generator's performance.

White distilled vinegar helps dissolve mineral scale, including calcium deposits, without requiring harsh chemical descalers.

🚫 Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners
🚫 Never submerge your Flask or place it in the dishwasher
💡 Doing so can damage internal electronics and void your warranty

Why Descaling Matters

Regular descaling helps:

  • Dissolve calcium and other mineral deposits
  • Loosen buildup around the hydrogen generator
  • Reduce cloudy residue and deposits
  • Address certain unpleasant tastes or odors caused by accumulated minerals
  • Provide sanitization and antibacterial action
  • Support consistent hydrogen production

What You'll Need

  • A soft, nonabrasive bottle brush (See the "Choosing the Right Cleaning Brush" section below for suggestions).
  • Warm filtered water
  • White distilled vinegar (3–5% acidity). Do not use ACV or higher-acidity cleaning vinegar.
  • A clean, soft (non-abrasive) cloth

Step 1: Prepare the Descaling Solution

Mix:

  • ½ white distilled vinegar (3–5% acidity). Do not use ACV or higher-acidity cleaning vinegar.
  • ½ warm (not boiling) distilled water

Pour the mixture into your Flask, making sure the hydrogen generator is completely covered.

TIP: For particularly stubborn mineral deposits or bacterial concerns, undiluted white distilled vinegar (3–5% acidity) may be used.

Step 2: Let the Solution Soak

Allow the vinegar solution to sit inside the Flask:

Cleaning Type Soaking Time
Routine descaling 3–4 hours
Stubborn buildup Overnight

Keep the Flask upright on a stable surface while soaking.

⚠️ Do not run the hydrogen generation cycle with vinegar or cleaning solutions inside the bottle.

Step 3: Clean the Cap & Gasket

For stubborn deposits on the gasket, you may soak the removed gasket only in 1:1 diluted vinegar solution for up to 2 hours.

⚠️ Important: Do not fully submerge or soak the cap. Water can become trapped inside the pressure release mechanism and interfere with its operation.

Check the threading, gasket groove, and accessible surfaces for mineral buildup. Allow the cap and gasket to air-dry before reassembly.

Step 4: Rinse & Air-Dry

Thoroughly rinse the bottle, cap, and gasket to remove any remaining cleaning solution.

Place the cap and gasket separately on a clean, dry surface and allow them to air-dry completely before reassembly.

Fill your Flask with filtered water and allow the water to remain in the Flask while your cap dries.

Remember: Your cap should dry thoroughly, but the generator at the bottom of the Flask should remain hydrated. Do not allow the generator membrane to dry out.

Step 5: Reinstall the Gasket

Once the cap and gasket are dry, reinstall the gasket in its original position.

Make sure the gasket sits completely flush inside the cap, without twisting, bunching, or raised edges.

An improperly installed gasket can cause leaking, make the cap difficult to secure or remove, and cause pressure regulation issues.

Step 6: Gently Clean & Rinse

Once your Flask descaling soak is complete:

  • Use a soft bottle brush to gently loosen remaining deposits from the interior (See the "Choosing the Right Cleaning Brush" section below for suggestions).
  • Avoid aggressively scrubbing the generator plates.
  • Pour out the vinegar solution.
  • Rinse several times thoroughly with fresh, filtered water.
  • Continue rinsing until all vinegar residue and odor have been removed.

Step 7: Run the Clean Flask Cycle

After rinsing and reassembling your Flask:

  1. Fill with fresh, filtered water.
  2. Secure the cap.
  3. Open the Flask's Settings → Clean Flask.
  4. Allow the cycle to complete.
  5. Discard the cleaning-cycle water and rinse thoroughly.

Refill with fresh drinking water, and you're ready to go!

Cleaning the Exterior of Your Echo Flask™

Keeping the outside of your Echo Flask™ clean is simple, but it's important to protect the sensitive electronic components while doing so.

Important: Never submerge your Echo Flask in water or place it in the dishwasher. Doing so will damage the internal electronics and will void your warranty.

How to Safely Clean the Exterior

  1. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Gently wipe down the exterior of your Flask to remove fingerprints, dust, and everyday residue. Avoid soaking the cloth or allowing excess water to run down the bottle.
  2. Stick to water or diluted white vinegar. Never use rubbing alcohol, bleach, harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners, as they may damage the Flask's finish or components.
  3. Protect the electronic components. Keep moisture away from the display screen, USB-C charging port, and electronic components near the generator. Never spray water or cleaning solutions directly onto the Flask.
  4. Dry thoroughly before charging. Use a clean, soft cloth to remove any remaining moisture, paying particular attention to the charging port. Make sure the port is completely dry before connecting your charger.

A Little Extra Protection

Helpful Tip: Consider using a silicone USB-C port plug to help protect the charging port from incidental moisture, dust, and debris.

These inexpensive accessories are available through third-party retailers such as Amazon.

Keep in mind that a port plug does not make your Flask waterproof and should always be removed before charging.

Warranty Reminder: Water damage caused by improper cleaning, submersion, or moisture entering the electronic components is not covered under the manufacturer's warranty.

Taking a few moments to clean and dry your Flask properly can help protect its electronics, preserve its appearance, and keep it performing as intended.

Important Cleaning & Maintenance Reminders

A little routine maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your Echo Flask™ clean, protecting its components, and maintaining consistent hydrogen production.

  • Never submerge your Flask or place it in the dishwasher. The electronic base, display, and charging port contain sensitive components that can be damaged by water exposure. The cap should also never be submerged, as moisture can become trapped inside the pressure release mechanism.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning tools. Never use bleach, alcohol, chemical cleaners, metal brushes, scouring pads, or sharp objects. Stick to recommended cleaning solutions and soft, nonabrasive brushes to protect the bottle and hydrogen generator.
  • Never run hydrogen cycles with cleaning solutions inside. Vinegar and other cleaning solutions are intended for manual cleaning. Always empty and thoroughly rinse your Flask before running the Clean Flask cycle or a standard hydrogen cycle.
  • Keep the cap and pressure release mechanism dry. After cleaning, allow the cap to air-dry thoroughly before reinstalling it. Avoid soaking the cap, as trapped moisture may interfere with proper pressure regulation.
  • Inspect and properly position the silicone gasket. Check for cracks, stretching, tears, or other signs of wear. When reinstalling, make sure the indented side faces inward toward the cap and the smooth side faces outward toward the bottle. The gasket should sit evenly and flush inside its groove to maintain a proper seal.
  • Rinse thoroughly after every cleaning. Even small amounts of cleaning solution can leave behind residue that isn't always visible. Rinse the bottle, cap, and gasket thoroughly before returning your Flask to normal use.
  • Always keep the hydrogen generator hydrated. The generator membrane must remain wet to function properly. When storing your Flask, keep enough clean, filtered water inside to completely cover the generator, approximately ¼ full. Never allow the generator membrane to dry out.
  • Don't wait until buildup becomes visible. Minerals and residue can accumulate gradually, even when the interior looks clean. Regular cleaning and periodic descaling help prevent deposits from becoming more difficult to remove.
  • Be mindful of your water source. Water containing higher concentrations of dissolved minerals can cause buildup to develop more quickly. Using properly filtered, purified, distilled, or reverse osmosis (RO) water can help reduce mineral accumulation.
  • Use the Clean Flask cycle regularly. This built-in maintenance function helps balance the generator plates and loosen light mineral deposits. However, it does not replace manual cleaning of the bottle, cap, and gasket or periodic vinegar descaling.

Helpful Tip: Keeping up with regular cleaning is much easier than dealing with stubborn buildup later! A few minutes of preventative care can help reduce avoidable performance issues, maintain proper sealing, and keep your Echo Flask ready for everyday use.

Choosing the Right Cleaning Brush

You don't need an expensive or specialized cleaning tool to care for your Echo Flask. A simple, soft bottle brush will do the job!

For best results, choose a brush with:

  • Soft, nonabrasive bristles that won't scratch the interior.
  • A brush head approximately 1 inch in diameter that fits comfortably inside the opening.
  • A handle at least 12 inches long to help reach the bottom of the bottle.
  • A flexible design that allows you to gently clean the interior without applying excessive pressure to the generator.

Avoid stiff bristles, metal brushes, scouring pads, abrasive sponges, and other tools that could damage the interior or generator components.

You can typically find suitable bottle brushes at grocery stores, home goods retailers, or online through retailers such as Amazon.

Long-Term Storage & Returning Your Echo Flask™ to Use

If you won't be using your Echo Flask™ for an extended period, proper storage is important to help protect the hydrogen generator and prevent unnecessary buildup.

The generator contains a specialized membrane that must remain hydrated, even when the Flask is not in use. Allowing the membrane to dry out may affect its ability to function properly.

How to Store Your Echo Flask

Before storing your Flask:

  1. Clean the bottle, cap, and gasket to remove any existing residue or mineral deposits.
  2. Add fresh RO or distilled water, ensuring the hydrogen generator at the bottom is completely submerged. Approximately ¼ full should be sufficient (avoid fully filling the Flask to help prevent mold & mildew growth).
  3. Secure the cap to help prevent evaporation and keep the generator hydrated.
  4. Store in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and freezing temperatures.

Important: The generator should never be allowed to dry out. If storing your Flask for an extended period, periodically check the water level and replace the water as needed to keep the generator fully covered.

Returning Your Flask to Use After Storage

Before using your Flask again, we recommend performing a thorough cleaning and descaling. This helps remove mineral deposits or residue that may have developed while the bottle was sitting unused.

Step 1: Descale the Hydrogen Generator

  1.  Follow the directions found above under "Deep Cleaning And Descaling (Weekly, Bi-Weekly or Monthly).

Once the descale is complete:

  1. Fill your Flask with fresh drinking water.
  2. Secure and lock the cap.
  3. Run a standard hydrogen generation cycle.

Your Echo Flask is now ready to return to your daily routine!

Helpful Tip: Even when your Flask isn't being used, water left standing for extended periods can become stale. Replacing the storage water periodically and thoroughly cleaning your Flask before using it again helps maintain cleanliness while keeping the generator properly hydrated.

Water Tastes or Smells Strange

Hydrogen-rich water should be fresh and odorless. If you notice an unusual taste or smell, it is typically caused by one of the following:

  • Water source quality
  • Mineral buildup
  • Mold or mildew growth
  • Insufficient cleaning

If you are starting to notice a weird taste or smell from your bottle, please do the following:

  1. Change Your Water Source. For best results, use: Distilled Water or Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water. These water sources contain fewer minerals and impurities that may affect taste and odor.
  2. Check Storage Habits: Avoid storing excessive amounts of water in the bottle when not in use.
    • Long-term standing water may contribute to:
      • Mold growth
      • Mildew growth
      • Mineral deposits
      • Unpleasant odors
  3. Clean and Descale: Deep Cleaning And Descaling (Weekly, Bi-Weekly or Monthly)
    1. Thoroughly clean the bottle and cap.
    2. Inspect under seals and lid threads.
    3. Perform a descaling cycle.
