Your Echo Flask™ is more than just a water bottle—it's a portable hydrogen generation system designed to produce high-concentration molecular hydrogen water using advanced electrolysis technology.
Many of the questions we receive about bubbles, pressure, sounds, moisture, and performance are actually related to normal operation rather than a product issue.
This guide will help you understand:
- How the Echo Flask™ works
- What normal operation looks like
- Why you may see differences from cycle to cycle
- What behaviors are expected
- When troubleshooting may be necessary
Understanding these concepts will help you get the most from your Flask and confidently distinguish between normal performance and a potential concern.
How the Echo Flask™ Creates Hydrogen Water
The Echo Flask™ uses advanced Solid Polymer Electrolysis (SPE) and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology to separate water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.
During each hydrogen cycle:
- Water enters the PEM electrolysis chamber.
- An electrical current is applied.
- Water molecules (H₂O) are separated into hydrogen and oxygen.
- Hydrogen is infused into your drinking water.
- Oxygen is safely removed from the system through the oxygen exhaust port.
The result is hydrogen-rich water without adding chemicals, tablets, powders, minerals, or gases from external sources.
The only materials involved are:
- Water
- Electricity
- Advanced PEM membrane technology
This allows the Flask to produce clean molecular hydrogen while maintaining a stable and neutral pH.
What Makes the Echo Flask™ Different?
Many hydrogen water products generate hydrogen at relatively low concentrations.
The Echo Flask™ is designed to operate under pressure to achieve substantially higher dissolved hydrogen levels.
In a single 10-minute cycle, the Flask can achieve approximately:
- 55 PSI
- 6 PPM hydrogen concentration
A 20-minute cycle can achieve approximately:
- 77 PSI
- 8.25 PPM hydrogen concentration
These performance levels are only possible because the system is intentionally designed to generate and manage pressure.
The Echo Flask™ uses Solid Polymer Electrolysis (SPE) technology to generate safe, effective hydrogen.
Benefits of SPE Technology:
- Pure Hydrogen: Generates clean hydrogen with no harmful byproducts.
- Durability: Engineered for reliable, long-term use.
- Environmentally Friendly: Releases only oxygen into the atmosphere for a green solution.
PEM System (Proton Exchange Membrane):
- Dual-Chambered Nafion Technology enhances performance and safety.
-
Key Features:
- Oxygen Port: Safely vents oxygen during electrolysis.
- Purity: Produces no chlorine, ozone, or hydroxyl byproducts.
- Stable pH: Ensures neutral water pH without added acidity or alkalinity.

How Long Does The Flask Last?
Echo's hydrogen water bottles use advanced PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) technology, which is guaranteed to generate hydrogen for at least 3,000 hours of continuous use—that’s approximately 18,000 10-minute cycles.
If you drink an average of 3 bottles of hydrogen water per day, your Echo bottle can continue producing therapeutic hydrogen-rich water for up to 16.4 years.
Why You May Notice Different Results From Day To Day
A common misconception is that every cycle should look identical. In reality, the Flask is operating in constantly changing conditions.
Even when using the same water source, variables may change from cycle to cycle, including:
- Water temperature
- Atmospheric pressure
- Humidity
- Altitude
- Mineral content
- Dissolved oxygen levels
- Water volume
- Membrane hydration
- Frequency of use
Because these variables are constantly changing, it's completely normal for:
- Bubble patterns to vary
- Pressure retention to vary
- Sounds to vary
- Moisture purging to vary
This does not necessarily indicate a performance issue.
Many visible changes customers observe are related to environmental conditions rather than hydrogen production itself.
Normal Echo Flask™ Behaviors
The following behaviors are generally considered normal:
✔️ Fine bubbles during hydrogen generation
✔️ Larger bubbles occasionally collect and release
✔️ Pressure building during operation
✔️ Pressure release sounds
✔️ Light hissing, crackling, sizzling, or humming sounds
✔️ Small amounts of moisture purging from the oxygen port
✔️ Variations in bubble appearance
✔️ Variations in pressure retention
✔️ Slight warmth during operation
✔️ Differences in performance appearance from cycle to cycle
✔️ Water purging from the oxygen exhaust port located on the bottom of the Flask.
In fact, many of these behaviors indicate the Flask is actively generating hydrogen and operating correctly.
Keeping Your PEM Membrane Hydrated
One of the most important components inside your Echo Flask™ is the PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane). This membrane plays a critical role in the hydrogen generation process and performs best when it remains properly hydrated.
This is exactly why every Echo Flask™ is shipped with a small amount of distilled water inside the generator. Don't worry—that water is not intended for consumption. Its purpose is simply to help keep the membrane hydrated during storage and transit.
Did Your Flask Arrive Dry or Has It Dried Out?
No worries! 😊
If your Flask arrived without visible water, has been stored for a long period, or simply hasn't been used recently, this does not mean it is damaged or is defective.
It will simply need a quick rehydration cycle to restore ideal membrane conditions before regular use.
This is a normal part of PEM technology and can happen with any hydrogen generator that has been sitting unused for an extended period.
👉 Rehydrating your Echo Flask™
A quick rehydration is all that's needed to get your Flask operating at its best! Why Does Membrane Hydration Matter?
Think of the PEM membrane like a sponge. When properly hydrated, it can efficiently conduct ions and support optimal hydrogen production. When it becomes dry, performance can become less consistent until moisture is restored.
Efficient Hydrogen Production
The PEM membrane relies on moisture to properly conduct the electrical current used during electrolysis.
If the membrane becomes excessively dry, you may notice:
- Reduced visible bubble production
- Inconsistent hydrogen generation
- Longer stabilization periods when returning the Flask to service
In most cases, a simple rehydration process is all that's needed to restore optimal performance.
Consistent Bubble Formation
A properly hydrated membrane helps create the fine hydrogen bubbles associated with normal operation.
While visible bubbles are not a direct measurement of hydrogen concentration, maintaining proper membrane hydration helps support consistent electrolysis and bubble formation.
Protecting the Membrane Over Time
Keeping the membrane hydrated helps:
- Support consistent hydrogen production
- Maintain optimal electrolysis performance
- Promote long-term durability
- Extend the overall lifespan of the generator
Bubble Performance
When you first start using your Echo Flask™, it can take up to one week of regular use for the bottle to build full pressure and produce consistent hydrogen bubbles.
The number and size of bubbles you see may vary — but this does not affect the hydrogen content or effectiveness of your water. Bubble visibility can change for several reasons, yet your Flask™ continues to deliver optimal hydrogen concentration regardless of how many or how large the bubbles appear.
What Can Affect Bubble Production?
- Temperature: Cold water tends to produce fewer bubbles, while warm water shows more.
- Pressure & Altitude: Changes in altitude or weather can alter the appearance of bubbles.
- Water Type: Different water compositions (and mineral content) may affect how bubbles look, but the PPM concentration remains consistent.
Frequency of Hydrogen Cycles: Running cycles more frequently helps maintain consistent bubble production. Infrequent use can lead to fewer visible bubbles, though PPM levels stay the same.
Electrode Maintenance: Electrodes may need descaling depending on your water’s mineral content. 🔗 Cleaning & Maintenance Of Your Echo Flask™
Bubble Size Variation
Hydrogen Bubbles: These are the small, fine bubbles that indicate active hydrogen production.
Larger Bubbles: These form as hydrogen accumulates around the frame above the anode and cathode. Eventually, they release naturally. Both small and large bubbles are expected due to the cage structure of the electrodes.

Expected Purging (Leaking) From Generator
⚠️ Small drips from the oxygen port are normal; however, always place your flask on a water-safe surface and away from electronics or important documents to prevent potential damage in the event of moisture or leakage.
We recommend taking a look at our complete guide: Why Does My Echo Flask™ Drip, Leak, or Purge Water?
This resource explains how your Flask operates, why water purging can occur, and how to tell the difference between normal operating behavior and something that may require a closer look from our Support Team.
Sounds from the Generator
If you hear humming, crackling, sizzling, ticking, or light hissing from your Echo Flask™, don't worry—these sounds are completely normal and are often a sign that the generator is actively producing hydrogen.
What's Making the Noise?
Your Echo Flask™ creates hydrogen-rich water through a process called electrolysis, which uses electricity to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water.
During this process, you may hear:
- Humming
- Crackling
- Sizzling
- Ticking
- Light hissing or whistling
- Brief pressure release sounds
The volume and type of sound can vary based on:
- Water temperature
- Mineral content of the water
- Hydration of the PEM membrane
- Age and usage of the Flask
These variations are normal and do not indicate a problem.
Oxygen Venting
As hydrogen is produced, oxygen must also be removed from the system. The oxygen exhaust port, located near the serial number on the bottom of the Flask, safely vents this oxygen during operation.
This may create sounds such as:
- Light hissing
- Crackling
- Soft ticking
- Light hissing or whistling
You may notice these sounds more when moisture or condensation is present near the oxygen port.
Pressure Release Sounds
Some sounds may also come from the pressure release valve located in the lid.
As pressure naturally builds during hydrogen generation, the lid may occasionally release pressure, creating a brief hissing sound.
👉 Understanding Your Echo Flask™ Lid
Because water conditions, pressure, and environmental factors change from cycle to cycle, it's completely normal for your Flask to sound slightly different each time you use it.
Bottom line: If you hear hums, hisses, crackles, or light ticking sounds, your Echo Flask™ is most likely doing exactly what it was designed to do—generate hydrogen-rich water. 💧

Additional Generator FAQs
How Do I Change the LED Light Color?
You can customize the LED light color inside your Echo Flask™ through the Devices section of the Echo Water App.
Simply connect your Flask, navigate to your device settings, and select your preferred LED color.
My LED Light Is Flickering. Is Something Wrong?
A flickering LED light does not affect the performance of your Flask.
We recommend:
- Opening the Echo Water App.
- Navigating to the Devices section.
- Changing the LED color.
- Running another hydrogen cycle.
This often resolves temporary LED display issues.
💧 Good news: Even if the LED light is behaving unexpectedly, your Echo Flask™ will still continue producing hydrogen-rich water normally. The lighting system and hydrogen generation system operate independently.
Why Aren't LED Lights Covered Under Warranty?
The LED lighting system inside the Echo Flask™ is considered a cosmetic feature rather than a functional component of hydrogen generation.
While the lights help allow for personalization through the Echo Water App, they do not impact:
- Hydrogen production
- Hydrogen concentration
- Pressure generation
- Water quality
- Device safety
- Overall Flask performance
In other words, even if the LED lights flicker, display the wrong color, or stop functioning entirely, your Echo Flask™ will continue producing the same high-quality hydrogen-rich water it was designed to generate.
Because LED performance can be affected by a variety of external factors—including moisture exposure, impacts, drops, normal wear and tear, and electronic component aging—the lighting system is not considered a warrantable performance component.
The warranty is intended to cover defects that affect the Flask's ability to perform its primary function: generating hydrogen-rich water.
If you experience unusual LED behavior, we still recommend trying basic troubleshooting steps such as changing the LED color through the Echo Water App and ensuring your firmware is up to date. In many cases, this resolves the issue.
💧 The good news is that even if the LED lights are not functioning properly, your Flask can continue producing hydrogen-rich water normally, and the effectiveness of your hydrogen water is not affected.
Can I Run Multiple Cycles Back-to-Back?
Yes! You can run as many hydrogen cycles as you'd like before drinking.
However, it's important to release the pressure after each cycle before starting another one.
Pressure is a normal and intentional part of hydrogen generation, helping increase hydrogen dissolution into the water. However, repeatedly running cycles without venting pressure can create excessive pressure buildup, which may contribute to moisture purging or leaking.
For best performance:
✅ Run additional cycles if desired
✅ Release pressure between each cycle
✅ Avoid leaving the Flask under pressure for extended periods
Will Hydrogen Concentration Increase with Additional Cycles?
Theoretically, yes.
Additional cycles may continue increasing the amount of dissolved hydrogen in the water beyond the levels achieved during a single cycle. Max cycle time is 20 minutes, and the pressure release must be completed following each cycle.
Published testing was performed using a single hydrogen generation cycle on approximately 12 ounces of water. Because we have not specifically tested multiple consecutive cycles, we cannot provide a verified hydrogen concentration increase or exact PPM value beyond our published test results of a 20-minute cycle.
For most users, a single cycle provides excellent hydrogen concentration and performance. 💧
